Statement from Arriva re CMA

On 20 May 2016 the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) referred the Northern franchise award to Arriva for an in-depth investigation.  In response, Arriva comments:

“Phase 1 of the Competition and Mergers Authority (CMA) investigation has not cleared the award of the Northern franchise to Arriva.  As a result the CMA has commenced a Phase 2 investigation.

“Arriva strongly believes that the operation of the Northern franchise alongside our existing bus and rail businesses in the region does not lead to a substantial lessening of competition.

“We are working closely with the CMA on the in-depth review of the evidence and relevant issues.  In the meantime, we will continue to operate the franchise in compliance with the terms of the award.  And in doing so we will deliver on our franchise commitments, utilising a £1 billion investment to transform Northern’s service for all our customers.

“The CMA have stated that their deadline for the final report is 3 November 2016.”
