The Original Tour and Smiles work to reduce emissions

Sightseeing supremos, The Original Tour, is continuingtheir ground-breaking work with North East based engineering firmSmiles to continue to reduce engine emissions from theirvehicles.

The project, sponsored by The Energy Savings Trust, is set tobring engine emissions in line with those fromenvironmentally-friendly gas powered vehicles.

Ian Tarran, engineering director for Arriva London, whichmanages The Original Tour, said:

We are constantly working to reduce our emissions andmake the fuel and the engines we use more environmentally friendly. This work with Smiles and the Energy Savings Trust is part of thatcommitment – and we are delighted to playing such an important rolein it.

The project has led to The Original Tour operating vehicleswhich meet Euro 5 standards and which feature a particulate filterwhich reduces the particulate matter, uncombusted hydrocarbons andcarbon monoxide by over 90 per cent. In addition, the modern dieselengines have been fitted with a Selective Catalyst Reduction systemwhich combats nitrogen oxides using a form of ammonia injected intothe system.

Buses with engines that now meet Euro 5 standards are alsoconsiderably quieter in operation.
