Arriva’s learning centres are a massive success!

The Learning Centre launched by Arriva Midlands on IndividualLearning Day – Thursday 15 May 2003, in partnership withLeicestershire Learning and Skills Council, The Transport andGeneral Workers Union (TGWU) and TUC Learning centres, has provedto be a massive success.

The centre was developed to offer employees an opportunity tolearn new skills in a specially designed learning centre at theirworkplace.

Situated at the Southgates depot, further learning centres areplanned for Wigston and Coalville depots, by the end of October2003. The centres offer access to courses offered by Learndirect,as well as allowing employees to address any basic skills issuesthey have or to work towards qualifications, which could help them, progress within the company. Learner support specialists are alsoon hand to help employees – whether they choose to learn in one ofthe centres or at home.

Keith Myatt, press and publicity manager for Arriva Midlandssaid:

We are very pleased with the response received fromemployees towards these learning centres. So far, more than 103employees have already signed-up for the various courses onoffer.

Christine Wood, the TUC's regional secretary for the Midlandssaid,

The enthusiasm for learning, generated by themotivation and support of the team of Union LearningRepresentatives has proved that workers are genuinely interested inimproving their basic skills. The partnership between the TGWU andArriva Midlands shows that Union Learning Representatives are thekey ingredient to successfully engaging workers back intolearning.
