Arriva wins €185m bus contract in Sweden

Arriva wins €185m bus contract in Sweden: Bus contract win for Arriva Sweden in the city of Helsingborg

  • Arriva wins eight-year, €185m bus contract in Helsingborg following a competitive tender
  • Arriva’s bid rated highest for quality – a key reason for winning the contract
  • The new contract will see Arriva operate the city’s new electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system

(London, 5 April 2018) Arriva, one of Europe’s leading passenger transport providers, announced today that it has won an eight-year contract to operate bus services in the Swedish city of Helsingborg, including the city’s new electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, branded the Helsingborg Express Line.  The contract was awarded following a competitive tender.

As part of the €185m contract, which begins in June 2019, Arriva will introduce 76 buses to the city network with a further six held in reserve. 13 of these buses will also form part of the new electric BRT system, and by 2023 a further 13 electric buses will be added to the fleet.

Arriva will also provide the latest ticketing systems and integrated timetables to deliver quality services to an estimated 16 million passengers in the first year of operation.

Johan Åhlander, Managing Director of Arriva Sweden added: “To win the contract to operate bus services in the thriving city of Helsingborg is fantastic news, and we are thrilled we scored highest on quality – something we take great pride in.

We submitted a strong tender which focussed on making travel easier and simpler for passengers, including new timetables, services, technology and improved integration with the train network.

The city’s new Bus Rapid Transit system is another exciting development which will help connect passengers in and around the city like never before. We look forward to starting the contract next year and to working closely with our partners to deliver the best services possible.”

Manfred Rudhart, Arriva Group CEO said: “This is an important contract win for Arriva as we continue to grow our presence in Sweden – a country where we have been operating bus services for nearly 20 years. Our focus, once the contract starts next year, will be to ensure we make travel on our services easy, convenient and attractive for our passengers.”

This latest contract win follows Arriva’s success in retaining the €550m Pågatågen train services contract in the Skåne region last year, which was renewed for a further eight years until 2026.
