A Newcastle-based train manager has won a European transportphotography competition for his stunning picture featuring Durhambus station.

David Brereton of CrossCountry has been presented with theArriva Photo of the Year 2010 award for his atmospheric image.

His picture was judged alongside other finalists for the annualaward, which is run by transport group Arriva.

David, aged 44, is originally from Chester le Street and nowlives in Brampton, Cumbria. He said: "This photograph is one ofnine I took while on one of our trains on the viaduct, a perfectvantage point with a stunning view across the rooftops. I wasfortunate with the timing too, the buses were in greatpositions."

David's fascination with photography started while at school,when he joined a photography hobby club. On leaving school he beganwork in a camera shop. For a short time in his mid-20s David hadhis own business, taking photographs for a living. His passion isfor landscape scenes, with transport shots a close second.

Judges at transport magazine New Transit said: "We really likedthe powerful, moody atmosphere of the picture - it makes publictransport look like the enlightened choice!"

His eye for a picture has netted him a total of £950 inprizes from Arriva's photo competition this year.

Arriva chief executive David Martin said: "David's photograph isstunning and represents the quality of many of the images wereceive from employees from across Europe."

The competition, open to all 38,500 Arriva employees across 11countries, attracts hundreds of entries every year from staffacross Europe.
